Our Mission

The Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to reducing firearm-related injuries and deaths in Oregon.

The Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation was founded in 1994 as a firearm turn-in event. COEF sponsored gun turn-ins and removed thousands of unwanted firearms from Oregonians and raised awareness of the risks and responsibilities of gun ownership,

In 2016, COEF created the concept of a Firearm Injury Prevention Bureau to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths. The Bureau, similar to the NTSB and other agencies, would investigate shootings to determine ways to reduce criminal access to firearms, and recommend changes in buildings, entrances, egreses that will allow people to escape or survive mass shootings.

COEF reminds Oregonians throughout the year that they have a right to prohibit guests from bringing firearms into their homes during parties or at the holidays — even if the hosts are, themselves, gun owners. A guest who brings a firearm into a home with children or when alcohol is served can be dangerous and reckless. Parents make the decision to place children in close quarters with a firearm, not the gun owner.

Our response to a mass shooting in Sandy, Oregon in June 2026 led COEF to collaborate with Survivors Empowered to create a free, online booklet of information for survivors of domestic violence. Often, after domestic violence, children might suffer the death of one or both parents, or one parent incarcerated, or the related death of a sibling or grandparent. The information is specifically designed to help survivors, children, teens, caregivers, and communities respond to domestic-violence related shootings.

COEF took the lead in August 2026 on educating gun owners about firearm-related lead (Pb) exposure with our “Leave the Lead at the Range” education campaign. The campaign focuses on gun owners, their families members (especially children), teens who participate in sports shooting, shooting survivors who are suffering from lead poisoning from retained bullet fragments, people who eat game meat, and people who are considering lead levels on the indoor surfaces of houses.
